アカデミー賞の花
僕は家内に比べてあきれるほど世事に疎い。結婚してからだいぶ経つが、学生時代から家内のことをよく知っている。家内は、情報収集のため週刊誌と月刊誌、あとはテレビをよく見ているが、一方こちらは限られた命だから変化しないものを身につけようとクラッシック音楽や古典、歴史などの本を読んでいる。バーミヤンの石仏破壊にしても人道的には許し難いことであるが、モハメッドがメッカからメディナに本拠地を移し、その後1年もしないうちに「ジハート（聖戦）」をメッカの隊商（キャラバン）にしかけたことからもわかる通り、イスラムにとってある意味では当然の行為である。このようにちょっとしたことは分かるが、日曜日の夜に家内が見ていたBSのアカデミー賞授賞式の模様では、どれがどんな映画なのか、このスターは誰なのか、そんなことはちっとも分からなかった。唯一わかったのは、ステージのバックにある花の趣味だった。日本人からするとちょっと大雑把な、そしてアクの強い感じすらした。これは第一印象で、よくよく目を凝らしてみるとなかなかもので、特にハリウッドで撮影されているとなるとこのくらいの花でないといけないし、花一つひとつがかなり入念に作られているものだとわかった。その時この番組を見る前に見ていた雑誌『花時間』に載っていた海外のお花屋さんの写真を思い出した。もしかしたら、それらの写真は日本の読者に気に入られようと日本の美意識を基準に撮ったのではないか。頻度はそう多くないが、パリやニューヨークの小売店に行くことがある。しかしその印象は写真から得るものとは随分違っている。日本で見る写真はどれも自然を大切にしその中にいる幸せ感を表しているが、実際の海外の店頭ディスプレイやアカデミー賞会場の花は、全体の調和は考えているものの一つひとつの個性が強く、アクの強さすら感じさせるものである。
日本の社会は、その場その場をうまく調和させることを主眼にここ60年歩んできたが、これからは花を通してでも花のアイデンティティーと作者のアイデンティティーを貫き通すことが調和という前提の上に必要になってくると思う。
Flowers in the Academy Awards CeremonyI know far less of the world compared with my wife. It has been so long since I got married to my wife. I have known her since university days. She likes reading weekly and monthly magazines and watching TV while I prefer to learn unchangeable things such as history or classics. For example, it may be humanely impermissible that Bamiyan was destroyed. However, taking account of the historical background that Monammad made a declaration of the Jihad to caravans no more than one year after he changed the holy place from Mecca to Medina, you may understand this action was taken with reason. Although I have a bit of knowledge of unchangeable things like this, I am quite ignorant of popular things. I saw the Academy Awards ceremony on TV with my wife last Sunday, however, I hardly knew any of the recent films and gorgeous actors and actresses. The only thing I understood was the taste of flowers decorated on the stage. The flowers looked rather roughly decorated for us Japanese. That was the first impression. However, when I watched them carefully, I found each flower sophisticated and elaborate. This reminded me of some photographs of flower retailers in foreign countries on a magazine which I had had a look at before watching the Academy Awards ceremony I wondered those photographs were taken based on a Japanese sense of beauty. They were apparently different from flower retailers which I saw in Paris and New York. Each picture seemed to express happiness. However, displayed flowers both in front of foreign flower retailers and the Academy Awards ceremony are too unique or even too peculiar.
Japanese society has put a high value on harmony for the last sixty years. However, it will be important to express identity of both flowers and flower arrangers on the assumption of perfect harmony.
